Ligularia dentata

24-36" tall. Large rounded slightly toothed leaves are bronzy-green with slight purple veining; undersides are bronze and purple. Worth growing for foliage alone, but the sunny marigold-yellow daisy-like blooms on stout stems contrast nicely with the moody foliage.

Our friends at Fieldstone Gardens tipped us off to using Ligularia leaves in bouquets: Cut a leaf, place it a few inches above the rim of your vase, and pass other flower stems through the leaf lobe to create a dark and textured frame for brighter blossoms. Leaves reach full size by the time the peonies are in bloom!

Prefers moist to wet soil and part shade; tolerates deeper shade, and can thrive in sunnier sites if you keep it watered. Native to China and Japan. Z3.
